Ascent

Cycle Eskolatik

Ascent Fiona Tan (Netherlands-Japan, 2016, 80 min.)

Through a gray blanket of cloud, the contours of a mountain can be barely discerned. This is Mount Fuji, a volcano with many faces and of immeasurable cultural and symbolic significance. Four thousand exceptional and diverse photographs from the past 150 years form the basis for this film. This art-film project is in essence a film made entirely with stills: a filmic experiment balancing delicately between documentary and fiction.

Conceiving Ada

Cycle Eskolatik

Conceiving Ada Lynn Hershman Leeson (USA, 1997, 85 min.)

Conceiving Ada works as a box of Russian dolls that ends up showing two women as in a game of mirrors. To rescue and vindicate Ada Lovelace the director creates a fictional character - perhaps her own alter ego - Emmy Coer, a young hacker and programmer located in New York in 1993. If we go one step further in this speculative game, we found Hershmann Leeson; a video artist, a cyberfeminist activist and the director of this film.

Limite

Cycle Eskolatik

Limite Mario Peixoto (Brazil, 1931, 120 min.)

The only film finished by Mário Peixoto, Limite, is considered one of the most important works in the history of Brazilian cinema. Extremely innovative for its era, it is directly inspired by Soviet cinema, German expressionism and Griffith's classic films, professing a view of film as art. Today, its importance is widely recognised due to its highly innovative approach to language, characterised by a slow, leisurely pace, shots of Brazilian landscapes and its revolutionary camera work, which alternates static stills with vertiginous movements set to classical music.
